Let’s talk about the problem of femininity in modern culture. Yes, you heard me right, the problem. Now before you go wondering if I've lost my mind or decided to throw out all my skirts and florals, let me explain. The world today is confused about femininity, presenting it either as outdated or as a burden. So, is there really a problem? Actually, no. The real issue is that we’ve been sold a counterfeit version of what it means to be a woman. Biblical womanhood, when understood correctly, is a gift from God.
Femininity has been labeled as weak, insignificant, or even a nuisance. It’s as if wearing grace, gentleness, and nurturing as a crown is something to be ashamed of. But, guess what? That’s a lie.
I’m not here to give you a lecture on the world’s messaging about women—you already know it. What I want to do is revisit what Godly femininity actually is. And spoiler alert: it's something beautiful, powerful, and divinely designed. In fact, let’s crack open the Bible for a sec.
Femininity by God's Design
One of my favorite examples of biblical womanhood in action is found in Proverbs 31. Now, don’t roll your eyes just yet! I know this chapter has been turned into a laundry list of “things Christian women must do,” but let’s actually take a look at what it says. The Proverbs 31 woman isn’t just cooking meals and knitting sweaters (though, hey, if you knit, more power to you!). She’s a boss. She buys land, she’s a savvy businesswoman, she’s got wisdom flowing from her lips, and strength is literally in her clothing. You can almost see her walking with confidence, like, “Yes, I know God’s got me.”
So where’s the problem of femininity? There isn’t one. Femininity, in its purest form, is a reflection of God’s beauty, grace, and strength. It’s nurturing without being weak, loving without being clingy, and powerful without being domineering. It is, to put it simply, a God-ordained gift. This is femininity as God’s design.
The World’s Counterfeit
So why do we feel like there’s a problem with Christian femininity? Because the world has counterfeited it. We’re told to embrace extremes. Either we have to be ultra-independent, smashing everything that stands in our way (including men and motherhood), or we need to shrink into some old stereotype where our only purpose is to smile and nod while suppressing all the dreams God placed in our hearts. Neither extreme is biblical and neither is satisfying.
Here’s the truth: God never designed femininity to be a restriction. The traits He gave us are meant to bring His glory to the world in a way only women can. Jesus Himself wasn’t afraid to show emotion, be nurturing, or even weep when His friend died (John 11:35). If the Son of God can embrace these qualities, why do we think there’s anything wrong with showing softness and strength at the same time?
Owning Femininity as Strength
So, what would happen if we started seeing femininity as strength instead of weakness? What if we saw it as a part of God’s character, a piece of His image that we get to carry? The truth is, femininity isn’t a problem—it’s a solution. It’s a way we can reflect the creativity, compassion, and resilience of God Himself. The benefits of embracing godly femininity are vast because it allows us to express a unique aspect of God’s design for humanity.
When women embrace their God-given roles—whether that’s in the workplace, in ministry, or as stay-at-home moms—they bring light into dark places. The problem of femininity only exists when we believe the lie that it’s something to be hidden or distorted.
In Conclusion
There is nothing wrong with femininity—it is the way of God. When we step into our Godly femininity with boldness and grace, we not only reflect His image but change the world around us. Let’s stop thinking of femininity as a problem and start owning it as the blessing it truly is.
